The Murrysville Police Department implemented a community notification initiative on January 10, 2010. The purpose of the initiative is to keep the following informed of crime issues, traffic problems or issues, community events and general advisories:
- Day Care Facilities
- Overall General Public
The goals are to expand communications between the police department and community; increase public safety and awareness; and have a better informed public. The Department will endeavor to utilize the notification system when needed, but there may be times when unavoidable circumstances interrupt information from being sent out.
The Community Notification System, Nixle, will provide the Department with the capability to rapidly disseminate accurate and secure neighborhood level information to residents. Nixle is the most precise, neighborhood-level, geo-targeted system available. Residents can choose to receive the information through e-mail, text-messaging or web access. If users have a cell phone plan with “unlimited” texts, it won’t cost them anything. If not, standard text-messaging rates will apply. There are no other costs involved to subscribe.
Through Nixle, the department will submit information that will fall under one of four categories. The categories are as follows with examples of each:
- Alert: Police activity/crime alert; missing person/child; evacuation; severe weather
- Advisory: Utility information, such as a power outage; meeting notice
- Community: Community message/news; event reminder/cancellation
- Traffic: Traffic congestion; traffic lights out; road closure due to accident or other cause

To become a recipient, visit the Nixle website and select “Register Now”.
- Create an account by choosing a user name and password.
- Enter an e-mail address and/or cell phone number.
- Enter your address or a nearby intersection, and select “Sign Me Up”.
Registration is simple, quick and secure. Although “Alerts” are sent to all, subscribers can select whether or not to receive the other notifications. Nixle protects the privacy of its users and does not sell personal information to third parties. Nixle’s website is very informative and provides answers to the questions residents may have.
